Some information on cartridges and styli

On a mono record the groove moves only side to side. Therefore the stylus in a mono cartridge only has to have sideways movement.
For stereo the groove also move vertically so the stylus has to move from side to side and up and down.

The terms for these movements are horizontal compliance for mono and vertical compliance for stereo
If we were to play stereo record using a mono cartridge there would be no up and down movement and therefore the stylus would carve its way through the vinyl and eventually cause irreversible damage.

At Dansette when we are replacing the cartridge we always fit wherever possible a new stereo cartridge. This covers all eventualities. Original cartridges are in very short supply.

There is a trade off though as the stereo cartridge does not give as much output as the mono variety, most noticeable in a single valve amplifier
So you may not rattle the windows at the 60s rave but at least your records will survive longer.

Should you prefer mono then we can always fit this as an alternative. As a rough guide, records were being made in stereo from probably the mid 1960s or mid Beatles era.

Hi I have a passed down Dansette Tempo model. I’ve a problem with the arm that jumps on lots of new and old records that spoils the enjoyment of the vinyl ! I live in the west mids and was wondering if a service would fix the problem. If so could you give me an idea of cost please. The player means a lot as it was my dads.
    Many thanks Iain.

    Hello there!

I have a Dansette “Bermuda” that DOESN’T have a cartridge fitted. Please advise if you have a compatible one in stock for this Dansette model and its price. Many thanks.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,

    Victoria.

    Hi,
I have a Dansette Bermuda which is currently fitted with an Acos GP91-3SC mono cartridge. I was hoping to change it for a stereo cartridge but I was wondering whether there was a particular type that would be compatible?
    Thank you.

I have a Cathty Mcgowan sponsored Dandette in reasobly good condition. It works in the sense that all the components function but sound quality isn’t great. Not sure whether it’s a worn stylus/cartridge issue or whether the control vol/tine dials need some attention. I sssume that because the model is from around 1965 and well before stero that the system is mono and therefore a mono stylus would be required. Can you help please. Rob
