Imagine you've just bought your childhood dream, a Ford Capri. It's a bit battered and it doesn't run too good. It certainly wouldn't pass it's MOT. Still, for £500 what do you expect?
However, it's what you've always wanted and the decision is to either get it back on the road or to restore it to showroom condition.
The decision is yours. As part of this blog we've detailed our repair and restoration process of a Dansette. (We don't do Ford Capris - but we do Dansette Capris!)
On a mono record the groove moves only side to side. Therefore the stylus in a mono cartridge only has to have sideways movement.
For stereo the groove also move vertically so the stylus has to move from side to side and up and down.
The terms for these movements are horizontal compliance for mono and vertical compliance for stereo
If we were to play stereo record using a mono cartridge there would be no up and down movement and therefore the stylus would carve its way through the vinyl and eventually cause irreversible damage.
At Dansette when we are replacing the cartridge we always fit wherever possible a new stereo cartridge. This covers all eventualities. Original cartridges are in very short supply.
There is a trade off though as the stereo cartridge does not give as much output as the mono variety, most noticeable in a single valve amplifier
So you may not rattle the windows at the 60s rave but at least your records will survive longer.
Should you prefer mono then we can always fit this as an alternative. As a rough guide, records were being made in stereo from probably the mid 1960s or mid Beatles era.
It started with a question.
Why is the awe-inspiring name of Dansette no longer in the public domain?
The name had been lost but not forgotten apart from a few fan sites.
There is no official Dansette repair or refurbishment solution.
Many people still own their Dansette from the 1950s, 1960s or 1970s. They may be packed away in the loft by now but vinyl has made a comeback and more and more owners are having their beloved product repaired or restored or seeking an alternative.
Younger people who are only just discovering vinyl also want a piece of history.
The alternatives i.e. the all in one retro looking systems are of such a poor sound quality most new comers find it hard to believe that vinyl ever took off in the first place.
To offer a repair and refurbishment affordable service .
We can simply repair with prices starting form £60 to a complete strip down and refurbishment.
Different options are available depending on the condition and how far as an owner you want to go.
We can clean and repair, or if the condition has deteriorated too much, then we can re cover the unit.
We have a range of fabrics in stock or can obtain almost any colour you wish.
Sadly the original patterns are no longer with us but we can get close.
We even have a unit that has had the ultimate make over in carbon fibre. (OK its not real carbon fibre but it looks pretty cool.)
Not really the end. Dansette is reborn. A new beginning
There are different routes for restoration depending on the condition of the player. It may be that the cabinet is in good condition with just a few bumps and scrapes or it may be completely trashed, the cloth is ripped and stained and the cabinet is damaged.
Your options are to have a restoration, retaining as much of the original as possible or to have it completely recovered. We have cloth covering that matches or is very similar in appearance to the original. Or you could have any finish you desire.
